When Sernick Bonsmaras present their production sale in Edenville on 29 May, their offer comprising 40 bulls (all Phase C tested), 60 stud cows, 20 stud heifers and 350 commercial cows and heifers, will represent the result of three decades of intensive and purposeful selection for economic traits. Growth and feed conversion, says Nick Serfontein, owner of Sernick Bonsmaras, is becoming more important with increasing grain prices.
“A commercial farmer wants heavy weaner calves exhibiting good growth and feed conversion. This, combined with fertility, is what Sernick is continuously selecting for. This year’s offering represents an outstanding representation of our selection programme and a couple of exceptional bulls.”
