Animals in production, such as cows with calves and growing heifers, often need more than just a phosphate lick during the summer months. Sernick Summer Lick 12 + P is a phosphate lick with added protein and energy to meet additional needs, such as milk production and growth. It is also ideal for use when the veld matures in late summer and its nutritional value decreases. Sernick Summer Lick 12 + P is a palatable, ready-mixed lick with high-quality protein and phosphate, and is safe to use.

FEEDING RECOMMENDATION:

Sernick Summer Lick 12 + P is a mineral supplement and not a feed. Sufficient pasture must always be available when the lick is offered. Keep lick troughs filled to prevent overfeeding by greedy animals. Excess intake can cause poisoning. Kindly consult the Sernick technical staff for information and advice.

FORM AND PACKAGING:

Lick is available in 50 kg bags.

WARNING:

This animal feed contains an NPN source and/or registered medicaments. Feeding should be done strictly according to directions.

General Principles And Guidelines For Lick Feeding

Meat production in South Africa is based on the use of natural pasture with varying nutritional value and frequent periods of low rainfall and drought. The purpose of lick feeding is to supply cattle and sheep with nutrients that cannot be provided by the natural pasture due to its shortfalls and varying seasonal deficiencies. Lick supplements must have the following aims: The replenishment of mineral deficiencies. The replenishment of protein to allow an animal to utilize dry season grazing more efficiently. Supplementing protein, minerals, and energy levels in critical stages of life when they cannot be supplied by the pasture. The basic guidelines for effective lick feeding are the following: Sufficient pasture/roughage must always be available. Animals must be gradually adjusted to a new lick. Intake of a lick must be gradually increased over a period of approximately 14 days. This can be achieved by mixing the lick with salt or by initially offering a phosphate lick. This prevents acidosis and/or urea poisoning. Prevent rain from falling on licks containing urea. Vinegar is an effective antidote for urea poisoning. Mix water and vinegar in equal parts and dose 2–4 bottles (1 bottle = 750 ml) per head of cattle. Sustained access to and availability of licks lowers the risk of overeating. However, lick intake is influenced by several factors, and accurate intake predictions are virtually impossible. Manage intake by offering licks regularly and ensuring that animals are not without a lick for longer than 24 hours. Provide enough feeding trough space and do not supply licks that contain urea near water troughs. There should be at least 500m or more separating water and feeding troughs.

UREA POISONING GUIDE

WARNING

  • These animal feeds contain urea and other NPN sources. Pellets should be fed strictly according to the directions for use.

  • Animals that are not adapted to urea rations must be fed a salt-phosphate lick for seven (7) days prior to feeding urea rations. Vinegar is an effective antidote for NPN poisoning. Mix equal parts of vinegar and water and dose half a bottle per calf or large sheep and 2–4 bottles per head of cattle (1 bottle = 750ml).

  • Protect feed from rain as NPN can dissolve in water. Animals that consume this contaminated mixture can be poisoned.

  • Do not offer this feed indiscriminately with other feeds that contain NPN.

Contact the Sernick technical staff for further information and enquiries.
