Growing replacement heifers is one of the most difficult and critical aspects of dairy farming. During this phase, the animal’s rumen develops from a single stomach into a ruminant system. The goal during this phase is to ensure rumen development and rapid growth without fat deposition in the udder tissue by using high-quality protein rations. Following Sernick’s optimal calf programme allows replacement heifers to develop to their full genetic potential.
FEEDING RECOMMENDATION:
Feed Sernick’s Calf Starter meal ad lib from 3 days old until approximately 10 weeks old or until the calf ingests around 700 g (for small-framed breeds) or 900 g (for large-framed breeds). After weaning, feed calves growth meal or pellets ad lib until they reach approximately 5 months old. After this, intake should be adjusted according to the heifer growth curve. For more information and advice, please consult the Sernick technical staff.
