SOUTH AFRICA, TODAY AND TOMORROW

SOUTH AFRICA, TODAY AND TOMORROW

By Nick Serfontein, Chairman of the Sernick Group

Marie Curie famously said, “Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand so that we may fear less.”

The people of South Africa are currently facing great uncertainty and hardship, as our country experiences a decline. However, we must not let these uncertainties prevent us from making necessary decisions in our daily lives, as indecision can lead to depression and wasted time.

Dr. Frans Cronje recently gave a keynote speech at Bonsmara SA’s Red Event, in which he stated that South Africa is in a much better position now than it was five years ago. The difficulties we are facing now are necessary for building a better future.

Although Covid and the crisis in Ukraine have been traumatic, it is important to look for the positives in any situation. In this case, the events have highlighted the importance of agriculture in South Africa, as it was the only sector that experienced growth during the pandemic.

There is currently a political debate surrounding agricultural land expropriation without compensation in South Africa. However, it is unlikely to happen, as it would be a self-destructive move for the country. Any nation without a strong agricultural sector is destined to fail.

Despite the challenges we face, a new spirit of resilience and determination has emerged in South Africa. We must not ignore the issues, but rather confront them head-on and make decisions that can positively impact our future. For some, this could mean investing in land and cattle.

OUR FARMERS DAY ON 1 MAY 2023

Our Farmers’ Day will be on May 1, 2023, as usual on Workers’ Day and we invite everyone to join us.

Theo Vorster will talk about why we should stay and enjoy South Africa, for good reasons.

I will talk about Land Reform and the Future of Agriculture.

Louis Steyl, CEO of Bonsmara SA, will talk about everything that cattle farmers need to know and understand, including a practical demonstration.

Hennie Snyman will discuss our auction offer on June 2.

We request that everyone who wants to attend the day RSVP on our website www.sernick.co.za.

UREA POISONING GUIDE

WARNING

  • These animal feeds contain urea and other NPN sources. Pellets should be fed strictly according to the directions for use.

  • Animals that are not adapted to urea rations must be fed a salt-phosphate lick for seven (7) days prior to feeding urea rations. Vinegar is an effective antidote for NPN poisoning. Mix equal parts of vinegar and water and dose half a bottle per calf or large sheep and 2–4 bottles per head of cattle (1 bottle = 750ml).

  • Protect feed from rain as NPN can dissolve in water. Animals that consume this contaminated mixture can be poisoned.

  • Do not offer this feed indiscriminately with other feeds that contain NPN.

Contact the Sernick technical staff for further information and enquiries.
